Meet Bandit

Bandit is a Rainbow Lorikeet, a species of parrot found in most backyards in Australia. They are commonly known as Lory’s and live in the trees of the rainforest, bush and woodlands. They often fly in large flocks and you can normally hear them coming. They are very noisy and can be quite territorial. Even large cockatoos know not to cross a Lory!

Bandit is our little squeaker

Bandit was rescued off the side of the road with injuries to his head, and feathers missing on the top of his head and breast. He was taken to a vet for review and a kind and compassionate lady agreed to care for him after he was released from the vet clinic. She couldn’t care for him long-term so contacted us in June 2020, and we agreed to continue his care with the hope of releasing him back in the wild.

When we brought Bandit home, he couldn’t walk forwards, only backwards. We knew he had some neurological issues and contacted our specialist avian vet for further review. Bandit was admitted to hospital twice due to his injuries. He was diagnosed with encephalitis (infection on his brain) and bacterial sinusitis. He was treated with antibiotics, vitamins and nebulization therapy. It’s a miracle he survived. He’s a fighter.

We agreed to adopt Bandit with an understanding that he may have long-term health issues and require ongoing care. We of course agreed. He’s still recovering from his injuries but he’s making squawking progress.  We adore him. He’s our little squeaker.
