Understanding the difference between carbon neutral and net zero emissions can be confusing. In this article, we explain the difference and why it matters.
Carbon Neutral vs Net Zero
At Luna-tic & Friends, we care about the environment and want to make a difference. Earlier this year, we set a goal to become carbon neutral as a part of our commitment to environmental sustainability. As we progressed with the project, we realised that a better option for protecting the environment would be for us to aspire to achieve net zero emissions. Here’s why.
Carbon neutral and net zero emissions are the buzzwords at the moment, and sometimes people use them interchangeably. But are they really the same thing?
Well, to be honest, they’re not that different. They both aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But the main difference is carbon neutrality only targets carbon dioxide emissions, whereas net zero emissions consider all greenhouse gases. Achieving net zero emissions requires an overall balance between the greenhouse gases you produce and those you remove from the atmosphere.
To do this, you must first calculate your greenhouse gas emissions. This includes emissions from fuel, electricity, gas, water, paper, travel etc. A good starting point is to base your calculations on the last financial year or calendar year. The more years you can include in your data scoping, the more accurate your baseline will be.
We’re in the process of calculating our baseline emissions. It’s a lot of work and receipts and invoices to go through. Initially, our calculations will be for the financial year 2022/2023.
Once we have calculated our emissions, we will then look at reducing these emissions by changing how we operate and possibly investing in new technologies. We will consider carbon offset projects, like planting trees for any remaining emissions if required.
Getting this right is critical, and to ensure we do, I have enrolled in a program through our local Chamber of Commerce, Business SA – Accelerating Net Zero for Business. I started the course in June this year, and I’m underway with building our emissions profile and collecting all our baseline data.
I’ll keep you updated on how we are tracking. Wish me luck!
